C Joseph Vijay

TVK | Tiruchirappalli (East) |
બાકી

Actor-turned-politician 'Thalapathy' Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is contesting in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from two constituencies — Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli (East) — a high-stakes electoral debut that has turned both seats into closely watched battlegrounds.

Vijay’s decision to contest from two seats is a strategic move aimed at maximising his chances of entering the Assembly. While not unprecedented in Tamil Nadu politics, the move signals the seriousness of his transition from cinema to full-time politics. Both constituencies are socially diverse, with significant working-class populations and sizeable Christian voter bases, making them crucial test grounds for his appeal.

Perambur, one of the largest constituencies in Chennai with over 2.2 lakh voters, has traditionally seen contests between the DMK, AIADMK and other major parties, though it has leaned towards the DMK in recent years. Tiruchirappalli (East), on the other hand, is a semi-urban constituency with a mix of urban and peripheral voters and carries strategic significance, having often reflected broader electoral trends in the state.

Having stepped away from his film career to focus on politics, Vijay has positioned himself as a challenger to the ruling DMK, framing the election as a direct contest between his party and what he has termed the 'evil DMK'. His campaign has emphasised anti-establishment messaging, urging voters to support TVK’s whistle symbol and give the party a mandate to govern.

His entry has also drawn sharp political reactions. DMK leaders, including fellow actor and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, have criticised his decision to contest from two seats, while TVK leaders have defended it as a bold move against entrenched political forces.

Beyond his own candidature, Vijay has fielded several candidates across key constituencies, including high-profile contests against established leaders, signalling TVK’s ambition to emerge as a significant third force in Tamil Nadu politics.

Candidate Info: C Joseph Vijay is the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate contesting from Tiruchirappalli (East) (General) Assembly constituency for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This male candidate is 51 years of age, according to the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
