The geographic coordinates of Bonai Assembly constituency are: 21°52'18.8"N 84°55'53.0"E. Bonai shares its borders with seven other Assembly constituencies. Other Odisha Assembly constituencies adjacent to Bonai are: Raghunathpali, Rajgangapur, Kuchinda, Deogarh, Telkoi, Champua, Pallahara. This constituency shares an inter-state border with: Jharkhand.

Demographic profile

There were a total of 2,26,812 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2024 Assembly election, of which 1,11,290 were male, 1,15,500 female and 22 of the third gender. In the 2019 Assembly elections, there were a total of 2,20,982 registered voters, of which 1,11,290 were male, 1,12,183 female and 9 of the third gender. In 2014 elections, there were a total of 2,01,018 registered voters in this constituency, of which 1,00,757 were male, 1,00,249 female and 12 of the third gender. In the 2009 polls, the number of total electors was 1,84,757 which included 92,446 male, and 92,311 female.

The number of service voters in Assembly constituency was 330 in 2019, 248 in 2014 and 204 in 2009.

In the 2019 Odisha Assembly elections, Laxman Munda of CPM won in this constituency beating Ranjit Kishan of BJD by a margin of 12,030 votes which was 6.96% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Laxman Munda of CPM was the winner in this seat beating Dayanidhi Kisan of BJD by a margin of 1,818 votes which was 1.11% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Bhimsen Choudhury of BJP won this seat defeating Laxman Munda of CPM by a margin of 3,356 votes which was 2.64% of the total votes polled for the seat.
