Nainar Nagenthran

BJP | Sattur |
બાકી

BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran is contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Sattur constituency in Virudhunagar district, marking a strategic shift from his traditional stronghold of Tirunelveli.

A seasoned politician, Nagenthran currently serves as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit and is also the party’s legislative leader in the Assembly. He has been elected as an MLA multiple times from Tirunelveli — first as an AIADMK candidate in 2001 and 2011, and later as a BJP candidate in 2021.

His political career began in the AIADMK, where he rose to prominence under J Jayalalithaa, holding key ministerial portfolios, including Transport, Electricity, and Industries between 2001 and 2006. Over time, he transitioned to the BJP, where he steadily climbed the ranks, eventually taking over as the state president in 2025.

The decision to contest from Sattur in 2026 is seen as a calculated political move. By shifting out of Tirunelveli, Nagenthran is attempting to expand the BJP’s footprint into new regions, particularly in southern Tamil Nadu where the party is working to consolidate support alongside its ally AIADMK.

Despite facing electoral defeats in Lok Sabha contests in recent years, he continues to enjoy strong backing from the BJP’s central leadership, reflecting his importance in the party’s southern strategy.

Nagenthran’s candidature has turned the seat into a high-profile contest, with national and state leaders campaigning to boost the BJP’s prospects.

Candidate Info: Nainar Nagenthran is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate contesting from Sattur (Scheduled Caste) Assembly constituency for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This male candidate is 65 years of age, according to the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
